The Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) is an international Catholic organisation with a mission to accompany, serve and advocate on behalf of refugees and other forcibly displaced persons. We are present all over the world, in an effort to help refugees everywhere.
JRS Ellada, Jesuit Refugee Service in Greece, is a very new organisation, as it was founded in November 2015, during the crisis created by the massive arrival of refugees in the country.
At that time, the situation was very different from what it is today, and most people arriving in Greece only stayed a few days before continuing their journey to the North and the West of Europe. Thus, JRS Ellada only provided a day centre, where refugees could rest for a few hours, take a shower or get access to Internet.
With the closing of the borders, the situation changed dramatically, and we had to adapt. Our shelter now welcomes people, especially vulnerable populations, for long stays, as a lot of refugees are stranded in Greece for an unknown period of time. From 2017, JRS Ellada runs one more shelter again in the Victoria sqare area.
